WHAT IS A POST SLAB POUR INSPECTION?

A post-slab pour inspection is a vital step in any concrete construction project. It ensures the slab has been poured correctly and meets design specifications before further work continues. This inspection helps identify issues such as cracking, uneven surfaces, poor compaction, or improper curing— problems that, if left unchecked, can lead to structural weaknesses or costly repairs later on. Whether it's a standard slab or a more complex system like a waffle or raft slab, confirming quality at this stage is essential for long-term durability, safety, and compliance with building standards.

​Foundation Layout and Positioning of the slab:

  • Correct Placement of the Slab: Checking that the slab is positioned according to the approved site plan and foundation design.

  • Slab Thickness and Reinforcement: Verifying that the slab is poured to the correct thickness and reinforced with steel mesh, reinforcing bars (rebar), or other materials as per the structural requirements.

Reinforcement and Structural Steel:

  • Exposed steel: We check all slab areas, rebates and step downs for exposed steel. This can cause major issues with rust if left exposed to the elements.

Services and Penetrations:

  • Plumbing and Electrical Penetrations: We look for any plumbing pipes electrical conduits, or other services embedded in or passing through the slab. These must be installed according to the plans and be properly protected.

Slab Sloping and Drainage:

  • Levelling of the Slab: Identifying high and low spots that are out of Australian standards and tolerances. Ensuring that the slab is level or sloped slightly where required to ensure proper drainage and water runoff away from the structure.

  • Moisture Barrier: Checking the installation of a vapor barrier to prevent moisture penetration from the ground, which could lead to mould or other structural issues.

Edge Beam and Footing Integrity:

  • Edge Beam Installation: Inspecting that edge beams are correctly formed, deepened, and aligned with engineering plans.

  • Foundation Footings: Verifying that footings (the concrete support beneath the slab) are installed to the correct depth and width, ensuring that they can support the structure.
